A morning with Sofia Lindqvist

Six thirty in Falsterbo. The reigning national champion on routine, nerves, and the horse that nearly ended her career.

The stable is quiet at half six, which is the point. Sofia Lindqvist has ridden in front of forty thousand people and says the only part she truly needs is this one.

"You cannot manufacture a partnership in the ring," she says, working a bridle strap through its keeper. "Everything you get on Sunday, you built on a Tuesday nobody watched."

Her record reads like an ascent: junior titles, a difficult two years, then three consecutive Grand Prix placings on a horse three dealers had written off.

She is unsentimental about the data. "I like that it is written down. It does not flatter me and it does not lie about the horse."
